10 tips for managing stress at the wheel caused by COVID-19

At present, stress is more present in the work of professional drivers and many transporters may suffer it due to the uncertainty and pressure caused by the health crisis of COVID-19.

To help control this problem, the Foundation for Road Safety (FESVIAL) has published 10 recommendations to try to manage the stress that can be caused by the current situation in driving:

  1. Get the necessary hours of sleep to be rested and keep in mind proper sleep hygiene.
  2. Do not spend too much time on negative thoughts that may cause worry or stress.
  3. Avoiding alcohol consumption and not self-medicating.
  4. Don’t set unattainable goals that can create pressure and overload. It is essential to always prioritize the most important goals.
  5. Enjoy your free time by doing something pleasant or fun. This will make you put aside for a moment the negative thoughts and worries caused by the situation.
  6. While driving, listen to music you like to make the trip more enjoyable. Don’t overhear information about the pandemic on the radio. It is important to be informed but over-information can lead to a feeling of constant uneasiness.
  7. Maintain a healthy diet that prioritizes fruits, vegetables and legumes and drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is essential.
  8. Reduce consumption of tobacco, coffee and other stimulants.
  9. Control your speed even when there is no traffic. High speeds can create tension and stress.
  10. If you suffer an anxiety attack while driving, it is best to stop in a safe area as quickly as possible. If you can not relax, ask for help. Shortness of breath, palpitations, choking sensation or overflowing are some symptoms of suffering a panic attack.

We are in a difficult and very responsible situation, but we must not lose sight of the fact that health is always the most important thing. Take care of yourself behind the wheel!
